ADHD AND GRAPE SEED EXTRACT
Grape Seed Extract proving to be extremely effective for ADD / ADHD, it is becoming a very attractive first-line method of choice by many physicians in the U.S.A. over conventional drug administration.
Grape Seed Extract (Proanthocyanidin) contain Oligomeric Proanthocyanidins (OPCs). Clinical evidence of the effectiveness of OPCs on ADD / ADHD comes from many sources. One is a psychiatric team in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who found twenty-seven adults and children with ADHD scored as well when they were taking OPCs as they previously had when taking stimulant medication. The team found that administration of OPC's reduced hyperactivity and increased attention and focus as effectively as Ritalin. James Greenblatt M.D. a child psychiatrist in Boston, Massachusetts, has reported success in reducing ADHD symptoms with OPCs as well. Dr. Greenblatt employs EEG biofeedback to measure his patients' responsiveness to therapies he uses. He found that OPCs reduced the number of theta waves - the daydreaming state -- in his young ADHD patients so that their attention was significantly increased.
A Scientific Explaination
Grape Seed Extract effects on ADD / ADHD symptoms is related to its ability to cross the brain's blood barrier, something that a few substances can do. The reason why Proanthocyanidin is so effective on ADD / ADHD is still unclear by there are three main theories. The first theory is that its effectiveness is due to Proanthocyanidin's outstanding and potent antioxidant quality. The abilities of the compounds to intercept and scavenge corrosive free radicals within the blood stream and brain, before they can attack, degrade and irritate the brain's cells. The second theory is OPCs found in Grape Seed Extract appear to help Vitamin C work better in the brain. Vitamin C is needed for the synthesis of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine, and dopamine, which are involved with ADD / ADHD. Vitamin C protects the brain against free radical damage, so the Vitamin C/ OPC combination acts as an antioxidant. The third theory is its effect on metabolic enzymes that regulate neurotransmitters. They appear to inhibit the breakdown of norepinephrine and dopamine. Recent studies have shown that ADD is associated with a faster than average reuptake (breakdown) of dopamine.
